It is an absolute joy to drive now that the SoCal sun is a out (rain is a different story for those who saw my ill-informed tire post this morning). Took the PCH through Newport Beach to Escondido and it was a ton of fun trying to keep up with the various Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Also, Google Maps tried to take us straight through Pendleton, which went well...fortunately the guard was a fellow Omahan and was totally cool about it.

I had a 2005, and miss it all the time. The GTI I traded it for was soulless by comparison.

Sounds like a good trip so far. I’ve never driven a mini but they seem popular so the company must be doing something right.

Particularly here, they are everywhere.

Glad you like it. We have a 13 MCS and 13 GTI both manual. GTI is more practical, a little quieter and honestly a better car in many ways. But we’re keeping the MINI as absolutely long as possible.

‘The’ PCH? Huh? You ain’t from around here, are ya...

Sure, you can take the 405 to the 55 to get down to Newport, but then you just get on PCH. :P

How about I just call it California State Route 1? Is that annoyingly Midwestern enough?

No worries. I was just recalling an article a few weeks back about the use of ‘the’ when used before freeway numbers. That stretch of road is part of my old stomping grounds, having grown up in Laguna and spent a good portion of my youth hanging out and surfing in Newport after work but before studying. Oh, to have that level of energy again..,

When I moved to the Midwest a few years back I had to learn the correct local way to identify streets and highways, including painfully mispronouncing obviously French and German names in the local fashion. My coworkers still give me grief on some my pronunciations and I’m adapting, albeit reluctantly.
